Pape CEO Remembered for Contribution to Industry
Eugene - Randy Pape, president and chief executive officer of The Pape Group Inc. since 1983, prominent community leader and devoted family man, passed away recently.
Pape is credited with the continuous expansion of one of Oregon’s largest privately held businesses. Continuing from the company his grandfather founded in 1938, he built The Pape Group into a holding company of six entities that provide sales and services for heavy equipment, material handling equipment and corporate aircraft in seven Western states — from Alaska to California. Pape was also president and Chairman of the Board for Liberty Financial Group, a financial services company he helped found in 1972 and the holding company of LibertyBank.
Working with the management team of that institution, he helped the company become Oregon’s largest privately-held bank. He was also a board member of NW Natural and a commissioner for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Pape chaired the United Way giving campaign in 1990, was a board member of The Nature Conservancy of Oregon, the Oregon Trail Council of Boy Scouts of America, and served with numerous non-profit organizations. Born and raised in Eugene, Ore., Pape earned a bachelor’s degree in business and finance from the University of Oregon in 1972. He was a loyal supporter of his alma mater, having served as a trustee of the University of Oregon Foundation, as board president from 2000 to 2001, and as chair of the University of Oregon’s Campaign Oregon.
He is survived by his wife, Susie; his sons and daughters-in-law, Ryan and Jennifer, Christian and Cheryl, Jordan and Keri; and six grandchildren, Henry, Charlie, Katherine, Braden, Colin and Patrick.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Randy Pape’s honor be sent to: The University of Oregon Foundation, P.O. Box 3346, Eugene, OR 97403-0346; and/or The Sacred Heart Foundation, PO Box 10905, Eugene, OR 97440.
UO Arena Receives Land Use Permit
Eugene - The City of Eugene has finalized the approval of the Conditional Use Permit for the new University of Oregon Basketball Arena following the closing of the appeal period on the land use decision. The $200 million dollar facility has cleared the final land use hurdle, and the University can proceed to submit building permits for the new building. Hoffman Construction, Portland is the general contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed in 2010.
Hamilton Wins Award for Environmental Protection
Salem – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has formally recognized Hamilton Construction Co., a contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation on the OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program, for environmental enhancements in rebuilding the McKenzie River bridges on Interstate 5 near Eugene.
During a pre-demolition inspection, inspectors found colonies of Townsend’s big- eared bats. The bat is a state sensitive species and a federal species of concern that uses cavernous spaces such as the old McKenzie River bridges for habitat. Since the new bridge design lacked open cavernous spaces, ODFW staff was concerned that the bats would likely abandon the site.
Together, the team members designed, approved and developed an inexpensive, innovative bat box design for use between the I-beams of the new bridges; ODOT agreed to monitor these boxes to determine the amount and type of bat use. If successful, these efforts will not only maintain a valuable roost site for Townsend’s big-eared bats but also result in a bat box design that can be used on other bridges across the state. In addition to the bat boxes, Hamilton proposed an environmental enhancement to protect spring Chinook salmon, a native to the McKenzie River and listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.
